Update Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 with Android 4.4.2 KitKat

Rakesh | 03 Jul 2014 | ROMs/ Samsung

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 was launched a year ago with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. Like most other Samsung Tabs, it was released in different variants. Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 sports a 7-inch display with 600 x 1024 pixels resolution, Marvell PXA869 chipset, Dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 3.15 MP main and 1.3 MP front camera, and Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery.

Since its release, the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 did not receive any major OS upgrade but finally Samsung has started rolling out the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the device. If you own the SM-T211 (3G+WiFi) model of the device and have not yet received the KitKat OTA update notification, it’s time to get the latest software update manually.

The users of the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 in Italy have reported getting the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update lately. Today we have come with the stock KitKat firmware for Tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 with build version T211XXBNF5. In case you want to update your tab manually, you can get it without waiting. Since the available firmware is unbranded, it can be installed on any SM-T211 that is not locked to a network operator.

Download Firmware

You can download the stock firmware for your device from sites like Updato and Sammobile.

Preparations

If you have decided to get the latest version of Android on your Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, here are a few things that you need to do beforehand:

  • Download the firmware file and extract the zip.: ITV-T211XXBNF5-20140703170455.zip
  • Also, download and install the latest Samsung USB Drivers on your computer. In case you have Kies installed, you can skip installing the drivers but make sure Kies remains close while you use the procedure described below.
  • Also, download Odin and extract the zip: Odin3 v3.09.zip
  • Enable USB Debugging on your Galaxy Tab 3. Follow these instructions if you do not know how to do so.
  • Updating with Android 4.4.2 will not wipe your device but we would still recommend you to backup your apps and data.

Update Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 with Android 4.4.2

Now here’s is how you can install the stock Samsung firmware on your Galaxy Tab 3 7.0:

  1. Extract the firmware zip file to find the actual firmware with .tar.md5 extension.
  2. Open the Odin folder and launch the program.
  3. Now boot your Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 into the Download mode: turn it off and then press and hold the Volume Down + Home + Power buttons together for about 2-3 seconds. You’ll see a warning screen, just press the Volume Up key to enter Download mode.
  4. Connect your Tab to your computer using USB cable.
  5. The ID:COM port on Odin will turn blue when your devices gets detected.
  6. Now click the AP button on Odin and select the firmware file with .tar.md5 extension.
  7. Make sure that only Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options are checked on Odin.
  8. Take a calm breath and click the Start button on Odin.
  9. Wait till the installation is done. It might take about 2-4 minutes.
  10. Your device will reboot automatically.

When your Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 boots up, go to Settings> About device and check the Android version. It should show Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Enjoy!

Hello Rakesh, Thanks for the site and its information. I followed the procedure and Odin confirmed a successful upgrade but when the Tab starts again, it is in the same version as before with the same applications, so in real nothing seems to happen despite a process lasting about 4 minutes. Any idea on the issue? Thanks

Hi, I received a notification for upgrading Samsung Tab 3, SM 210. I pressed ok, it than asked for installing the software, which I did. It rebooted and started installing. After installation reached 100 %, it stopped and it was not moving forward any further. I switched off the tab and restarted twice, but it does not boot properly and stops at the page where samsung is written. Please guide me what to do.

Hi, if you have a rooted device, you can easily disable OTA notifications.

Download “disable service” from Play Store
      Open it
      Go to System Apps
Find Google Services Framework and tap it
      Uncheck “SystemUpdateService”
      Restart your device.

      or

If you do not have root (not sure if it’ll work), go to Settings> Applications> All and find the software updater app, tap it and force close it.

Thank you, I went through the steps to root mt device and confirmed with Root Checker app. I then went through the additional steps that you listed to disable notifications for a rooted device. Once I restarted the device the software update notification popped up again. Are there any additional or other steps that I can take to remove the notifications. Your advice is appreciated.

I think you have not done a data factory reset after upgrading to KitKat. Do it and you will notice the magic. All new firmwares eat more battery than usual. Remember the battery performance on your tab when you bought it. Give it some time until the battery is synced.

Is there any reason why this can’t be uses with smt210 since they are essentially the same tablet, only the smt210 is WiFi only. Has anyone tried IR? I can’t think of any reason why it wouldn’t work. Also how likely is this process to brick the device?

The difference of model number is itself a valid reason. Even if the firmware is installed on T210, it will surely have issues with some features of the device.

Okay thankyou for the fast replies, are there any known issues with the T210 as I have seen YouTube videos of people using 4.4.2 on them and I assume this is the method they used? Or is there one that is made for the T210? I am tired of waiting for Samsung’s update which is looking increasingly like it won’t happen for this device

Ricky – Let us know if that works on the T210. I’ve got one on the way and had expected to be able to upgrade to 4.4.2. Kind of bummed that its not being pursued really well by Samsung – always been a fan of their products. Any insights would be useful. Thanks.

The worst that can happen to your device is, it can get into bootloop, but you can fix it by reflashing the firmware. Just do things carefully, and you will have 4.4.2. As for 4.4.4, it’s not yet available for your device.
