Root Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Firmware

Rakesh | 12 Feb 2013 | Root/ Samsung

The Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G started rolling out on February 08 and currently it is available for the users of this phone in France. This is the latest version of  Android OS from Samsung and it brings a host of new features an improvements to the phone. Among the Premium Suite Upgrade features introduced with this update to the Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G include new user interface, TouchWiz Nature UX, improved camera function, new Lock screen, Direct Call, Smart Stay, Pop-up Play, new Widgets, Blocking Mode, new Notification Panel with editable shortcuts, and Google Now.

If you have updated your Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean firmware recently and now wish to root it, we are here with a very nice method that will let you achieve root permission on your device. Thanks to XDA member, Ryuinferno, who has come up with a very easy method allowing users to root their devices by flashing the zip files directly via stock 3 recovery. The key feature of this release is that the root package can be used for rooting both Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean running Galaxy S2 I9100G. Where as the common method of rooting the phone increases the flash counter of your device, resulting in loss of warranty, this method does not increase the binary counter. Here are the features of the and contents of the rooting package for your phone:

  • SuperSU v0.99 by Chainfire
  • Busybox v1.20.2 by Stericson
  • No yellow triangle
  • No increase in binary counter

Having rooted your Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G, you will be able to install useful apps that require root access. Besides rooting your phone, the tutorial will also guide you to install the ClockworkMod Recovery that will let you install mods, themes and custom ROMs. Though the procedure described below is safe and tested, it is our duty to warn you that is will void your phone’ s warranty.

Preparations:

  • If you would like to root your phone only, download the rooting package SU-BB-Installer.zip and copy it to the external SD card of your Galaxy S2.
  • In case you wish to install a custom ROM after rooting your device, download one of the insecure Blazing Kernel files that also contains the ClockworkMod/Twrp Recovery inside it. To install the CWM/TWRP recovery via Android Stock Recovery, download the preferred version from below and copy it to the externa SD card:

    Blazing_Kernel_v8_CWM6_MOD.zip
    Blazing_Kernel_v8_TWRP.zip
  • To install the CWM recovery using Odin, download the preferred version from below. You can choose from the three versions of the CWM recovery:

    GT-I9100G_Blazing_Kernel_v5_CWM6_MOD.tar
  • Download and install Samsung USB Drivers if you have installed it already. If you’ve installed Kies on your PC, you need not install the drivers separately. (for Odin method only)
  • Put your phone on charging mode till it is charged to the level of 70% at least.
  • Enable USB Debugging Mode on your phone : Settings> Developer Options>.
  • Rooting usually does not affect any data of you device but it is a good practice to backup all important data on your phone. Backup your contacts, call-logs, messages, APNs, bookmarks, calendar, apps & games using these apps.

Root Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G:

Make sure you have taken care of all preparatory steps described above and then follow the steps given below.

  1. Turn off your phone and boot it into recovery mode. To do this, press and hold the Volume Up+Home buttons together and then press and hold the Power key till the Samsung logo blinks for two times. Release the Power button now but keep the other two keys pressed till you see a black background with blue text.
  2. Using the Volume buttons scroll to “apply update from external storage”, select it by pressing the Power button, navigate to the “SU-BB-Installer.zip” and select it.
  3. Wait for the installation to finish and when it is done, scroll to “reboot system now”.

Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100G running on Android 4.1.2 XXLSR Jelly Bean official firmware is now rooted successfully. To ensure that the root was successful, you can install the Root Checker app  to verify if it was successful.

Steps to Install CWM on Galaxy S2 I9100G via Recovery:

  1. Turn off your phone and boot it into recovery mode. To do this, press and hold the Volume Up+Home buttons together and then press and hold the Power key till the Samsung logo blinks for two times. Release the Power button now but keep the other two keys pressed till you see a black background with blue text.
  2. Using the Volume buttons scroll to “apply update from external storage”, select it by pressing the Power button, navigate to the “Blazing_Kernel_v3_TOUCH.Zip“ and select it.
  3. Wait for the installation to finish and when it is done, scroll to “reboot system now”.

When your phone boots up, it should have ClockworkMod Recovery installed on it. To check that your phone now has it, enter the recovery mode using the method described above. If you can see “ClockworkMod Recovery” text on the top of the screen, it is installed. Reboot the phone.

Steps to Install CWM on Galaxy S2 I9100G via Odin:

  1. Download Odin and extract the zip file on your desktop.
  2. You will also have to download the CWM file with .tar extension from the link above.
  3. Turn off you phone and enter Download or Odin mode: press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power buttons together for a few seconds.
  4. You will  see a screen asking you to press the Volume Up button. Press it and you will enter the download mode.
  5. Open the Odin folder and run the program by clicking the .exe file there.
  6. Connect your phone to the computer via USB cable and wait till Odin detects your device. A successful connection is indicated by the ID:COM port turning blue and “Added!!” text at the message box below.
  7. Make sure that only the “Auto Reboot” and “F Reset Time” options are checked on Odin. odin-pass
  8. Now click on the PDA button and select the file with .tar extension.
  9. Then hit the Start button on Odin and let the game begin. Wait till you get “PASS!” message followed by a device reboot.

When your Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G boots up, it will have ClockworkMod Recovery installed on it. Now you can install a custom ROM or mod on your phone. Cheers!

Every Android device has a recovery system that is used to recover a device in case it is stuck on bootanimation or has any other problem. It is also used to install official update zip packages. Developers have made a custom recovery system with added features that takes advantage of root access on a device and can replace system files or add new files to it. ClockworkMod or CWM is one such custom recovery.

Remove the battery, wait for a while and reinsert. Then try again. Btw. I have updated the post with the latest CWM file, you can also try that if you get into the recovery.

The boot loop will occur again or not depends on whet you do with your phone. The easiest way to know if your phones bootloader is locled or unlocked is to check for official software update. If it says “modified” software, your phone should be unlocked. Go to Settings> About> Status, scroll down to the last item. If it says Modified, your bootloder is unlocked.

Well, you can flash CWM without rooting but it would not work unless it has root permissions. So you must root your phone if you want to install custom ROMs via CWM.
