Install Android Nougat on AT&T Galaxy S6/S6 Edge (SM-G920A/G925A)

Rakesh | 03 Apr 2017 | ROMs/ Samsung

Android Nougat on AT&T Galaxy S6/S6 Edge - Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge - Droid Views

Almost all variants of the Galaxy S7 have already received the Nougat update and now the Korean giant seems to have turned its eye to our good old Galaxy S6. While the international models of the phone got the Nougat OTA more than a week ago, the users of the AT&T variant have not started receiving it.

Since the full Android Nougat firmware for the device is not available anywhere, you will have to flash the OTA zip packages depending on your current firmware version in incremental order. In this tutorial, we’ll see how we can install Android Nougat on s6.

If you have not been able to get the official Nougat OTA on yourย AT&T Galaxy S6 (SM-G920A) or S6 Edge (SM-G925A), you can update your phone’s software by installing the OTA zips provided below.

Disclaimer

Please note that your AT&T Galaxy S6/S6 must be fully stock to install the OTA. Though we have taken utmost care in laying out the installation steps, a successful installation depends on how you follow them. Proceed at your own responsibility and don’t go ahead if you don’t understand at all what you are going to do.

Getting Prepared

Before you proceed, here’re a few preparations you need to make so that things go smoothly for you.

  • Backup all your data and apps using Smart Switch as aย precaution.
  • Go to Settings> Personal> Lockscreen and security> Find my mobile and turn offย Reactivation Lock.
  • Go to Settings> Developer options and enable USB debuggingย (this is just as aย precaution).
  • If you have disabled any system apps, please enable them fromย Settings> Applicationsย or the OTA file installation might fail.
  • Charge your Galaxy S6 so that it has 60% battery level at least.

  2. Make sure to enable USB Debugging on your phone.
  3. Install the Samsung USB drivers on your computer.
  4. Now turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6ย and reboot it into the Recovery mode by pressing and holding the Volume Up + Home + Power buttons at the same time for 4-6 seconds. When you see the recovery screen, release the 3 keys.
  5. Scroll down to apply update via adb option using the Volume down key and select it by pressing the Power key.
  6. Connect your phone to the computer via aย USB cable.
  7. Now open theย adbย folder, and copy the downloaded update zip file (SS-G925AUCS5DPK5-to-U5EQA8-UP.zip, for example) to it.
  8. Place the mouse pointer at any empty space inside the folder window, and press Shift + right click on the mouse and select “Open command window here” option.
  9. When the command window is launched, type the following command and press the Enter key to check that your device is properly connected.
    adb devices
  10. If you see a string of characters as result, you are good to go.
  11. Now type the following command followed by the name of the OTA zip file you want to install. Here’s an example:
    adb sideload SS-G925AUCS5DPK5-to-U5EQA8-UP.zip
  12. Press the Enter key.

One addition. After I used the instructions in the April 12, 2017 update section, the phone started back up and worked fine, but only showed 9GB or so of storage on my 64GB phone. I saw the solution on another site, so am passing it along here. All you need to do is one more step which is to reset the phone to factory. Could be painful for some, but this my old phone and I’m using it for music control and a few other things so I didn’t care. Once I did the reset, I could see the entire 64GB of storage. This flashed my phone to the December, 2017 update. Do you know if more current version are available? Thanks again! Such an easy process!

Hi Oren, “flag” is a typo. I actually meant flash or install. First of all, Install the QC1 firmware that is the latest Marshmallow release for the device. After that you need to install the QC1-QCF OTA zip file as described in the guide.

Flashing the OTA through ADB will wipe your phone’s data so don’t forget to backup your device first.

PK3 to QB8 is an OTA zip file. Odin detects only .tar or .tar.md5 files.

OTAs must be installed using ADB sideloading method described in the tutorial.

        Hi,

What do you mean by “flag the Nougat OTA”, assuming the firmware installation ended successfully, so I need to do it, is it the adb sideloading section, doe it going to wipe my data?

        thanks.

I mean that after installing the firmware successfully you have to flash or install that Nougat OTA zip file via ADB Side-loading. You can find the instructions for that same above.

Yes, But thanks brother….the problem is solved now….what I sorted out is that the issue is not with the update packages….rather its an ADB server support issue….the platform tools you provided in the link does not support either bootloader version 6 or the android 7 version itself….so I tried the minimal ADB fastboot. And it went with success! The same issue is with the S6 edge plus at&t another guy is experiencing on another forum on Droidview…better help him out also….
