Install Android 4.4.2 KitKat on AT&T Galaxy S4 SGH-I337

DJ | 29 Jun 2014 | Root/ Samsung

The AT&T variant of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is model SGH-I337 and brings in the same hardware configuration of the S4 and moreover, AT&T didn’t take much of time to bring the tasty Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to the Galaxy S4 SHG-I337. It is here now in our hands, ready to be pushed to your device. The released build is labeled I337UCUFNB1 and consists of new features like Galaxy Gear compatibility, Dialer app, Camera, Gallery app update, drag-and-drop function and several other upgrades & bug fixes. The procedure is quite simple and familiar to any Samsung user, using the Odin flashing tool to Install Android 4.4.2 KitKat on AT&T Galaxy S4 SGH-I337.

Prerequisites

» Install Samsung device drivers and reboot your PC: Click here

» Enable USB Debugging if you haven’t enabled it till now, detailed steps on how to do it could be found here.

» Charge your S4 at least to 60% of battery to avoid any mishaps during the process.

» Backup everything, this includes your internal storage, music, photos, SMS, contacts etc.

» Download Odin flashing tool and extract it to a suitable location: Click here

» Download the firmware package and extract its content: Click here

Steps to Install Android 4.4.2 KitKat on AT&T Galaxy S4

  1. Open the Odin flashing tool by double-click the Odin3 v3.09.exe.
  2. Make sure that F.Reset Time and Auto Reboot are selected and everything else is unchecked.
  3. Power off your S4 now. Press the Volume Down + Home + Power keys altogether until you see a warning screen. Press the Volume up key now to boot the device into Download Mode.
  4. Connect the device to the PC now, using the USB data cable.
  5. On the top left of the Odin window, the ID:COM port will be show, which means the device connection has been successfully established. If not, try re-installing the drivers properly.
  6. Click on the PDA/AP button, browse to wherever the firmware package was extracted and select ALL_ATT_I337UCUFNB1_I337ATTFNB1_505595_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
  7. Click on the Start button to activate the flashing process which will merely take a few minutes. Until then hold back and do not disturb the setup in any way.
  8. On completion, a PASS!! message will be displayed, post which the device will reboot automatically and reboot into the new and updated firmware on your AT&T Galaxy S4 SGH-I337.

How does it feel to be operating on the latest Android version? Incredible, I am sure. Tell us your views about this update using the comments. Your support is highly appreciated.

Lollipop Bootloader is write protected, so you won’t be able to downgrade. You can upgrade though.

Rakesh before I go, I’m just curious(This is just for my reassurance that I can’t downgrade).. I was trying to follow a bunch of different tutorials earlier trying to downgrade..
I was basically trying to follow this tutorial: http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s5/489071-tutorial-downgrade-samsung-galaxy-s5-5-0-4-4-kitkat.html
But because of Lolipop’s bootloader is it impossible? I
‘m sorry I’m dragging this conversation out for so long.

          • Apr 15, 2015 at 9:48 AM
            Rakesh says:

Yes, the undowngradable bootloader is the culprit. The tutorial you are referring to is about the Verizon S5 and it’s quite irrelevant for you at least.

Hello, i’m having trouble. I’ve had my S4 for over a year now and have never thought of rooting. I tried rooting and did successfully, but when I was uninstalling app through Titanium Backup, I guess I accidentally erased the Home button function. I did not know what to do so I tried reseting back but somehow I ended up with a factory reset phone. I want to update but my Wi-Fi won’t turn on and when I try, it gives me a security warning and tells me to reboot my device. Once I reboot my device it gives me the same error again so i’m stuck with a useless phone! I want to restore my phone back to factory, please help! Model: SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 At&T, Android Version 4.3. Now your device has nothing to do with AT&T. So now i guess it is GSM. If it so you can try and install the GSM S4 firmware, instead of the AT&T one.

Make sure the battery has some juice left on it. Since you said you see no sign of activity like power up and even boot screen, I think it’s the battery issue. You should try a different battery.

The symptoms do point to that but I have been through a similar situation with my S3 long ago. Try this: pull out the battery, wait for a couple of minutes, reinsert the battery and try again.

It might also be a hardware issue. I mean the power button might not be working.

Do not try installing a custom recovery over a locked bootloader. The bootloader on AT&t and Verizon variants are locked and so you will not be able to install a recovery.

Safestrap should work for you though if you have root on the device.

But still, when I use safestrap, the “root to recovery” is greyed out even after I pressed “install Recovery”. Would you give any suggestion? I am aiming to install Phoenix rom on my GS4.

Hi, you can easily root your device using towelroot:

However, it won’t help you in downgrading to 4.2.2. As I told you earlier, Samsung’s KNOX bootloader makes this complicated.

Hi I am new to this site, but as I was following this thread I couldn’t help but wonder if this version of KK 4.4.2 is a fix, for the current 4.4.2 KK that that I have already on my GS4 i337?. I upgraded to KK 4.4.2 around late Feb, early Mar, with some truly bad results. I’ve been experiencing some horrendous bugs such as, lag time (when turning the screen on, once it goes black), a lack of touch response, and screen freezing as well. This all happens daily, with the solution to my problems so far is only rebooting the phone (After the reboot the phone is fine, until the aforementioned occurs again). 4.3 was a battery drainer, but at least I was able to use my phone consistently through out the week without having to reboot once. So my questions are is this a FIX to my phone issues, and if not do you know if the soon to be released KK 4.4.3 & 4.4.4 will be a FIX to these issues?

        Thank You

Hi, you can easily find if this firmware version is greater that one installed on your phone. Go to Settings> About device and match compare the build number to I337UCUFNB1.

If you find it newer, you can go with it.

I just checked my phone’s firmware version, it’s I337UCUFNC1. This might be a silly question, but with KK 4.4.3 & KK 4.4.4 either out now or soon, can you tell me what’s the difference between my current firmware I337UCUFNC1 and what I await with the recent ATT firmware update?. I’m a bit skeptical to make the plunge, because my last update to KK 4.4.2 has made my phone a lot worst than the previous JB 4.3.

            Thank You

Well, if you are having issues with NC1, the new update could address those issues.

Anyway, the problems you recounted above can be fixed by a data factory reset and wiping cache partition via system recovery. Then you can also try these tweaks:
