Use Volume Keys as Dedicated Camera Button on Sony Xperia Z

Rakesh | 22 Jul 2013 | Guides/ Sony

Lack of a dedicated camera button is universal to most Android phones. I do not know why Android device manufacturers, who boast of launching the best camera phones, do not even think of adding a camera button. A physical camera button is one of the most essential things a device with a powerful lense can have but its exclusion from most powerful smartphones is really shocking!

When Sony released theย Xperia models like the Xperia ZL and Xperia ZR with a physical camera button, it seemed that the company has revived the good old trend but its current flagship Xperia Z still lacks it. However, there is a good news for the users of Xperia Z as now they can feel compensated for the absence of a camera button.

XDA memberย black97one, has come with a mod that allows you to capture pictures using the volume down key.ย The mod also lets you to use the volume key to take pictures in fast capture mode from standby. It works on all devices with Android 4.1.2 and 4.2 with stock rooted firmware. If you using a stock-based custom ROM, the mod will also work for you.

Requirements:

A rooted Sony Xperia Z with root access and CWM or TWRP recovery on stock based Android 4.1.2 or 4.2 ROM.

How to Install:

Installing the volume down camera button mod is very easy. Just follow the steps given below:

  1. Download the mod file and copy the zip to your device.
  2. Turn off your Xperia Z and boot it into recovery mode. To do this, reboot it by pressing the Volume UP and Power buttons; when the Sony logo shows up and the LED light on the phone lights up, start pressing the Volume Up key repeatedly until you see the recovery mode.
  3. Using the “install zip from sdcard”, navigate to the mod file and confirm installation.
  4. When it is finished, go back to main menu reboot the device.

When the phone boots up, you should be able to take pictures with the volume down key. Do not forget to share you thoughts on how it works for you. Cheers!
