Popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei’s sub-brand Honor debuted their flagship Honor Magic 2. The Honor Magic 2 features a manual sliding mechanism that hides the camera, earpiece and sensor. The phone features a notch-less 6.4in wide 19:9 Full HD+ AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The flagship device is powered by a powerful Kirin 980 SoC coupled with a Mali-G76 MP10 GPU, 6GB of RAM on the 128GB storage variant and 8GB of RAM again on the 128GB/256GB storage variant. Unfortunately, a dedicated MicroSD card slot is not present in the device. The fingerprint scanner is integrated into the display and possibly Huawei’s 3D face unlock is onboard the Honor Magic 2.
This is a six-camera smartphone
Photography is handled by a triple camera setup at the rear featuring a primary 16MP (f/1.8) (PDAF) + 16MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide angle + 24MP (f/1.8) black and white monochrome sensors combination assisted by a single LED flash. Up front again we do have a triple camera setup featuring a main 16MP snapper (f/2.0) + 2MP (f/2.4) depth sensor + again a 2MP (f/2.4) infrared depth sensor that assists you in unlocking the phone by employing 3D Face Unlock once you slide the phone down. Both the rear and forward facing cameras can record videos at a resolution of to 2160 @ 30fps and 1080 @ 30fps respectively.
Battery power, connectivity and Android OS
A large 3500 mAh battery is onboard the Honor Magic 2 to keep the lights on and also the device is topped up via the USB-C port and having said that the device also features fast battery charging dubbed Magic Charge (10V x 4A = 40W). Honor claims the device can charge from 0% to 50 % in just 15 minutes.
Coming to the connectivity side of the Huawei Mate P Smart, it has you covered with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0 LE with A2DP, GPS for navigation and location-based services and more. As expected on pretty much any flagship smartphone nowadays, the device does not feature the good old 3.5mm headphone jack we all love. The Honor Magic 2 runs on Android 9.0 Pie based EMUI 9.0 out of the box.
Design: nearly bezel-less and completely notch-less and at the same time looks like the P20 Pro
The Honor Magic 2 does a great job in trying to be almost completely bezel-less with that notch-less display design, thanks to the sliding mechanism. However, flip the Honor Magic 2 and instantly you can see Honor has taken a page from Apple’s and Huawei’s book for that rear panel look and camera module design and placement.
Yoyo virtual assistant
The Honor Magic 2 employs a virtual assistant dubbed “Yoyo”. Honor claims the virtual assistant is an all in one smart living enabler that’s possessed with mind reading and machine learning capabilities.
Pricing, availability and colors
Now coming to the pricing, The 6GB/128GB, 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB models of the Honor Magic 2 will set you back CNY 3,799, CNY 4,299 and CNY 4,799 respectively. It is already up for pre-order on various online and offline channels in China. Sales will begin starting November 6, 2018. The Honor Magic 2 will be available in gradient Blue, Black or Red.
