“Apple of the East”, a phrase often used for Xiaomi, should not be taken in good sense for the Chinese OEM. “OEM”? I don’t even think it right to use the abbreviation for Xiaomi at least. OEM means “original equipment manufacturer” as the Chinese company is original in no way. Actually, everything started a couple of years ago when some Chinese guys from the CyanogenMod team separated to develop a new ROM that used CM sources and its theme engine and redesigned the UI by copying the iOS. Because many people in the South Asian region feel attracted towards Apple devices and cannot have them because of heavy price tags, MIUI got immense success among them.
Just compare MIUI 6 and iOS 7 and you would find a striking similarity between them. Xiaomi is further accused of blatantly infringing GPLv2 which the company tries to hide by not making the kernel source code public. Xiaomi started manufacturing smartphones running their in-house MIUI ROM about a year ago and very recently they released the Mi Note that looks so similar to the iPhone 6 Plus. Such types of shameless infringements and rip off, you would agree, cannot be justified at all.
Anyway, let’s return to the topic we’re here for.
