EMUI 5.0 Update Based on Android Nougat Rolling Out to Honor 8

James H. Carter | 11 Feb 2017 | Android News

Today, February 11, the US owners of the Honor 8 are expected to receive a massive update to their devices. EMUI 5.0 beta test was launched in cooperation with XDA in November, for this phone, and the final form of the update will start rolling out now to all users.

Three months ago, Huawei has announced that it started recruiting Honor 8 beta testers for EMUI 5.0. The previous Android skin was a bit confusing and sluggish and the company promised to redesign it, to include a simpler UI, better security features and improved performance. Huawei has introduced a new app drawer that’s disabled by default, but users were able to enable it in the settings menu. Huawei had enough time to make important changes in EMUI 5.0 and users noticed a better notification management, a better settings area and many more. The homescreen has become more polished and there was less lag as well.

The company has kept all native Android features untouched, such as Google Now on Tap, quick app switching, Knock Knock support, which allows users to swipe across the screen using their finger and launch multi-window, and there are many shortcuts that help users accomplish over 50 percent of core tasks in two clicks and 92 percent with three clicks.

The new update will roll out to Honor 8 owners in the US, after it was released alongside the Mate 9. The Honor 6X owners will have to wait for EMUI 5.0 until Q2, and there are many fans who were disappointed because Huawei has released it in January without Nougat.

The Honor 8 sports a 5.2-inch LTPS Full HD screen, it uses a HiSilicon Kirin 950 chipset that’s powered by an octa-core (4×2.3 GHz Cortex-A72 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex A53) CPU backed by 4GB of RAM, it’s available in two variants of internal memories of 32GB and 64GB, expandable with a microSD card, and on the back is found a Dual 12 MP camera with laser autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash. The front camera is 8MP and the battery has a capacity of 3000mAh.
